General Information: Short description
The primary research activity of this project is focused on the development of a multi-service cloud-based IoT operational platform of general purpose, called EMULSION, along with new models and techniques for intelligent recommendation and provision of IoT services, mainly in the areas of smart environment and smart healthcare, but also with capabilities for application in other IoT domains. The platform has been developed as a representative of the new generation of horizontally structured IoT platforms.
A suitable multi-layered platform architecture has been designed, utilizing low-cost electronic components and open-source software, while adhering to key engineering principles to achieve the necessary interoperability. This ensures the efficient provision of various types of personalized and contextualized IoT services over heterogeneous (wireless) communication networks, as well as efficient support of software applications using cloud infrastructures, anytime, anywhere, and in any possible way, in accordance with the ABC&S paradigm for ensuring that users are always the best connected and best served.
A wide range of scenarios, use cases, and application areas of the developed platform has been realized, demonstrated through various prototype systems built on its basis, operating in IoT domains such as smart environment, smart healthcare, smart infrastructure, smart water supply, smart home, and others.
Specifically, for the first two IoT domains (smart environment and smart healthcare), a stable and reliably functioning AQI pilot system has been developed, along with a corresponding software application for generating and recommending the healthiest route for patient movement through areas with polluted air. This means selecting a route with the least health risk for the respective user-patient.
